Children's Advocacy Centers of Mississippi presents the Family Advocate training this summer at the Children's Advocacy Centers of Mississippi Training Room at 1675 Lakeland Drive, Suite 402, Jackson MS. The training will be delivered in 2 modules that are 3 days each.
This course is for Family and Victim Advocates of all agencies who work with children who are victims of crime and their families. This training introduces trainees to the the role and responsibilities of an advocate, provides them with the core values and standards of practice of an advocate, provides them with an understanding of trauma informed care, child maltreatment, victims rights, and culturally competent and ethical practice. Trainees will also gain knowledge and understanding of the role of the multidisciplinary team in child maltreatment cases.
The cost of the training is $100 and covers both modules. Both modules must be completed in order to receive a certificate.
Topics to be covered in the training include: Role of the Family Advocate, Preparation for working with victims of trauma, Reducing trauma to the children through parent/caregiver support, Navigating the system of advocacy, Reporting law and dynamics of reporting child maltreatment, Dynamics/signs/symptoms of child maltreatment, Crisis Assessment and intervention, Risk Assessment and safety planning, Victims rights and crime victims compensation, Navigating the system - Roles and responsibilities of stakeholders in child welfare.
Communication skills - Active listening, Continuum of caregiver support, Family dynamics when a child is physically abused/sexually abused, Group work with caregivers, Cultural considerations/cultural competency and diversity, Ethics and boundary issues, Secondary trauma and self care.
Criminal justice 101 (Court education); Supporting children in court, Providing updates to family on case status, On-going work with the family; Tips for working with the multidisciplinary team, Understanding the coordinated MDT response, Accessing treatment and other services (including protective orders, housing, public assistance, domestic violence intervention, transportation, financial assistance, interpreters and others as needed), Coordinated case management meetings, Trauma informed services, Self care checkup.
