Family Advocate Training

The Victim/Family Advocate training will be offered in three modules in Late Summer/Fall of 2017. The registration cost of 0 covers all three modules. Paid advocates who missed a previous session during the 2016 offering may contact CACM to make-up that session during the 2017 offerings.


The training consists of three modules presented by the Children's Advocacy Centers of Mississippi. The registration fee covers all three modules.


Module 1 will be offered August 16-17, 2017
Module 2 will be offered September 20-21, 2017
Module 3 will be offered October 18-19, 2017


The times will be 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. the first day and 8:30 – noon on the second day of training.

Module 1 Topics: Role of the CAC Family Advocate- Preparation for Working with Victims of Trauma, Reducing Trauma to the Child through Parent/Caregiver Support, Navigating the System of Advocacy, Reporting Law and Dynamics of Reporting Child Maltreatment, Dynamics-Signs-Symptoms of Child Maltreatment, Crisis Assessment and Intervention, Risk Assessment and Safety Planning, Victim Rights and Crime Victim's Compensation, Navigating the System-Roles and Responsibilities of Stakeholders in Child Welfare

Module 2 Topics: Communication Skills-Active Listening, Continuum of Caregiver Support, Family Dynamics when a Child is Physically Abused-Sexually Abused, Group Work with Caregivers, Cultural Considerations-Cultural Competency and Diversity, Ethics and Boundary Issues, Secondary Trauma and Self Care

Module 3 Topics: Criminal Justice 101 (Court Education), Supporting Children in Court, Providing Updates to Family on Case Status, On-Going Work with the Family, Tips for Working with the Multidisciplinary Team, Understanding the Coordinated Multidisciplinary Response, Accessing Treatment and Other Services Including Protective Orders-Housing-Public Assistance-Domestic Violence Intervention-Transportation-Financial Assistance-Interpreters and Others as Needed, Coordinated Case Management Meetings, Trauma Informed Services, Self Care Check Up
